Iglu-Dorf Davos-Klosters

Davos, Switzerland

Iglu-Dorf Davos-Klosters is rebuilt every winter on the mountain above Davos, and dismantled by meltwater every spring. The village is a cluster of domed snow structures carved out by hand, with sleeping chambers, a bar and a common dome connected by low tunnels.

Guests sleep on insulated mats inside expedition-grade bags, with the interior holding near freezing whatever the weather is doing outside. The evening runs on fondue, a hot tub set in the snow, and the walk out under an alpine sky; the morning runs on the fact that the ski area starts at the door. Nothing here survives the season, which is the arrangement everyone signs up to.
